A group of ragtag companions creep through the shadows, trying to remain unseen by the guards. They’re trying to break into the castle to free the Pixies that are being held captive by the Lord’s mage. You see, Pixies have pixie dust, which has great magical properties. And mages are always trying to figure out ways to utilize the power of pixie dust for themselves and their Lords.
One of the guards starts to turn towards the direction of the rescue party. They hold their breaths…when suddenly the guard whips around to the other side, grabbing the side of his neck. A soft, high pitched giggle can be heard, but there is nobody to be seen. The group quickly sneak past the distracted guard, into the castle. Inside, they hear the giggle again.
“Well done, Berrygust” mutters the leader of the group. After which a small Pixie with bright blue hair and a bow in her hands turns visible.
Berrygust is a Pixie Rogue, who’s made it her mission to help save her kin from mages and other evils. And, fine, save some other creatures and people while she’s at it. In this blog, we want to show you how you can create a look for such a character.
Blouse
There are many different interpretations of how Pixies look. One thing that seems to be a common trait, though, is that they are rarely dressed in heavy or stiff clothing. They are generally lightly dressed. Since Berrygust is a rogue, and thus wears armour, we did feel like there had to be something of a blouse worn underneath her armour. The blouse used in this look is extra versatile, as part of the sleeves are detachable. The long version of the sleeve will give a more playful and cute image, and the shortened version is more practical when wielding weapons

Skirt
Even though Berrygust is a rogue, we didn’t want to completely disregard her background as a playful and light forest creature. This is why we opted to give her a long skirt. A Pixie doesn’t need to be able to run or climb, so a skirt wouldn’t get in the way of her mobility at all.

Fabric belt
Pixies like to dress up. They love to add all kinds of details to their ensemble. As a rogue, too many frivolous accessories wouldn’t be very practical, so Berrygust has more simple accessories. They do still have a connection to nature though, through colour and material, such as this green, woven belt.

Armour
In a lot of myths and folklore, pixies can be repelled with iron or other types of metal. Therefore, steel armour wouldn’t make that much sense in a Pixie look. Leather armour would be a much better alternative. Pixies are also often seen as forest creatures, so leather works much better to show their connection with nature than steel.

Vambraces
When shooting a bow, there is always a risk of whiplash from the bow string. This is why archers wear a bracer on their forearm. Vambraces, on the other hand, are generally a part of plate armour, to protect the arms in battle. In fantasy costuming, you can play around with these items. Leather vambraces on an archer who also handles other weapons would definitely be within the realm of possibilities.
Also, when creating a character that cannot handle steel, such as a Pixie, leather vambraces are a perfect way of adding extra protection.

Another way to give a nod to Berygust’s connection with nature is through accessories. Leaf designs and natural materials would be wonderful details to add. This leather headband doesn’t only tick those boxes, but the shape around the cheeks also gives the idea of it being armour.

Bow
Pixies don’t actually like violence and weapons. Mischief, sure, but that’s where they draw the line. Only on very rare occasions do Pixie turn to weapons. Long range weapons would make more sense for a character that doesn’t particularly like to use any. They can distance themselves from the fighting this way. With Pixies being able to turn invisible, they would also be even more difficult to target when they are attacking from a distance.
