The so-called Norman shield was originally meant for equestrians, but it became popular among infantrymen because it protected the foreleg. The shield is associated with the Normans who are depicted using this type of shield on the Bayeux Tapestry.
This shield is made of 10 mm thick wood and is covered with linen. The linen is glued to the wood and painted white so that it can easily be painted with your desired colours.
