Product description
In Norse mythology, a valkyrie is a female figure who guides the souls of the dead to the hall of the god Odin, Valhalla. There, the fallen warriors become the "einherjar" (lone fighters). If the einherjar are not preparing for the events of Ragnarök, the valkyries accompany them. Valkyries are also often depicted as lovers of heroes or other mortals, sometimes as daughters of royal families, and sometimes accompanied by ravens, swans, or horses.
Valkyries appear in the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda, Heimskringla, and Njáls saga, all written in the 13th century. They also feature in skaldic poetry, a 14th-century charm, and various runic inscriptions.
The Old English word wælcyrge appears in several ancient manuscripts, and scholars have debated whether it entered Old English due to Norse influence or whether it represents a tradition that also existed among Anglo-Saxon pagans. There are theories about the relationship between the valkyries, the Norns, and the dísir, all of whom are supernatural figures associated with fate. Excavations in Scandinavia have uncovered amulets that may depict valkyries. In modern culture, valkyries have become a popular subject in artwork, music, comics, video games, and poetry.
