In the Renaissance, the sword became more and more a second weapon, alongside the gun. The blades became narrower with a sharper tip and the basket hilt became widespread. The ricasso also became more and more popular and was often used. One of the best known Renaissance swords was the rapier, which was mainly used as a duel and fashion weapon. This slender sword came into use around 1470.
