Product description

William 1st of England, William the Bastard, better known as William the Conqueror, was a Norman king. Already at a young age, William was threatened by enemy Norman rulers who coveted his herited land and possessions. After many conflicts, his hold on the former Viking kingdom of Normandy was secured in 1060. William now focused on England.

After Edward the Confessor's death, William claimed English kingship for himself. In 1066 he led a very well-prepared expedition over the canal and defeated the Anglo-Saxon king Harold II of England.

In the years after Hastings, William got hold of England. He ordered for wooden fortifications to be made, that were later immortalized in stone structures, and he commanded the making of an enormous inventarisation also known as the Doomsday Book. William was the founder of the medieval English royal house.

This coin is based on original pennies that were minted during his reign. The coin is made of leadless pewter.
