Product description
The Normans were a medieval people in the Duchy of Normandy, arising from the mixing of Norwegian Vikings and the local population of West Francia. After Viking raids on the French northern coast, mainly by Danes, and partly by Norwegians and Swedes, the Norwegian settlements were legalized in 911. Viking leader Rollo swore allegiance to King Charles III of West Francia after the Siege of Chartres, which led to the establishment of the County of Rouen, later the Duchy of Normandy. The Norsemen adopted the language, religion, and customs of the West Franks, but retained their martial spirit and sense of adventure. As a result, a unique Norman identity emerged in the 10th century, which continued to develop over the centuries.
