Product description

In the High and Late Middle Ages, monks from monastic orders wore a tabard over their tunic. The tabard was fastened with a belt. It was a humble piece of clothing that was worn by low classes in society, like farmers and foot soldiers. The tabard served to protect the tunic and other garments under the tabard from dirt during work.

From the twelfth century onwards knights wore surcoats to wear over their plate armor. According to historians, wearing a white surcoat originated in the era of the Crusaders, it reflected the heat away from the plate armor. Later, other colors were also worn. From the thirteenth century, the heraldry of the knight was depicted on the garment, so that the heraldry could be recognized in the battle.

This tabard can be worn as the simple piece of clothing for monks, farmers and foot soldiers, or as surcoat over plate armor. You can also decorate it with your own heraldry or customize it with a cross of a knight order.
