This lunula amulet is a replica of a 10th century original, excavated in the region of the Kievan Rus. Around the 10th century, the tradition of wearing Lunula amulets was passed on by the Slavic peoples to the Vikings of the Baltic Sea region. Long before this period, lunula amulets were worn by the Germanic tribes, a tradition that was adopted by the Romans. Lunula amulets were mostly worn by women and girls. They symbolized protection.
