Product description

This coin is a replica of originals that were minted during the reign of Scottish king Robert the Bruce.

In 1296, the English king Edward I invaded Scotland in an attempt to conquer it permanently. Shortly after, a Scottish revolt against the English rule started led by Sir William Wallace. After a years long war of independence one of the pretenders, Robert the Bruce, was crowned king. This was the beginning of the campaign where Bruce was in war with both England and several Scottish clans who supported other pretenders among which John Baliol and John Comyn.

Finally, in 1314, the largest part of Scotland was under Bruce's control. This depended on the amount of clans like MacDonald that supported Robert the Bruce. The last English attempt to recover the hold on Scotland resulted in the Battle of Bannockburn. The Bruce defeated the English army so crushingly that Edward II had no more chance to support his claim on the Scottish throne by military force.
Only in 1327 a peace treaty was signed by the English king Edward II to end the Scottish War of Independence.
