The houppelande was one of the most characteristic outer garments of the late Middle Ages. From the second half of the fourteenth century it was worn in large parts of Europe by both men and women. The garment was worn over a cotehardie or doublet and was distinguished by a wide cut, a high standing collar and richly finished details. For wealthy citizens and nobles, multiple rows of buttons, expensive fabrics and careful workmanship were a sign of status. The houppelande remained an important part of European fashion until the end of the fifteenth century.

This houppelande is based on examples from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The tall one collar and the double row of buttons on the front are in line with historical images and finds from this period and give the garment a neat, authentic look.

The outer fabric consists of a brushed wool blend which combines the warmth of traditional wool with a softer finish. The cotton lining increases wearing comfort, making the houppelande comfortable to wear even during longer events.

Wear this houppelande over a cotehardie or doublet as a representative top layer of a late medieval outfit. Suitable for re-enactment, living history, Renaissance fairs and historical events. Available in red.
