This late medieval cap is based on the round headgear worn in late medieval Europe. The model shows similarities to the Italian beret, which developed from simple, round cap-shaped hats. Similar headgear was already known in the late Roman period, including the pileus pannonicus, which was worn by Roman soldiers.
In the late medieval period, this type of hat became particularly popular in Flanders and Burgundy, and in Southern Europe it was also widely worn by townspeople and citizens. From the end of the medieval period onwards, the hat remained in use during the Renaissance. Younger wearers often wore it loosely and askew on the head, while cardinals and other high-ranking persons wore it more often upright, as can be seen in depictions of, among others, the doges of Venice.
The cap is made of authentic 100% wool felt.
