The cross is traditionally made in Ireland on the eve of St Brigid'ss Day (February 1) and hung above doors or windows, to protect the house and residents against fire, hunger and disaster. The symbol is probably older than Christianity: in pre-Christian Irish mythology, Brigid was one of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the 'people of the goddess Danu'. According to Christian tradition, Saint Brigid of Kildare wove such a cross at the deathbed of her father, who was baptized after explaining the meaning. Together with the four-leaf clover and the harp, the cross of Brigid is still one of the most famous symbols of Ireland.
