The burgonet helmet (sometimes also called a Burgundian sallet) was a combat helmet from the Renaissance. It was developed from the sallet at the beginning of the 16th century. Burgonet were very popular throughout Europe. They were worn by the aristocracy, demi-lancers, cavalry officers and cuirassiers. In the English-Scottish border region, the Elizabethan Border Reivers were known for being mad about this type of helmet.
The shape of this helmet was indirectly influenced by the Greenwich style. The helmet crest on this helmet was influenced by the all'antica style that emerged in Italy from the first half of the 16th century onwards. During the Renaissance, there developed a particular interest in Classical Antiquity and this had a major effect on plate armour development. The steel helmet crest is based on the stylized helmet crests of Roman legionaries, thus associating the wearer with this glorious past.
This magnificent burgonet is a replica of the many 17th century cavalry helmets that nowadays lie in museums. These helmets were worn by cavalry officers who at that time often armed with small swords and wheellock pistols rode towards the enemy. Or rode hard away from them. As a cavalryman, that's possible! This burgonet is equipped with cheek plates that contain ear holes. It has a neck and eyebrow protector for protection against incoming projectiles.
