This tortoise brooch is a replica of a Viking find from Akershus in Norway and belongs to the Petersen type P42. This type of oval braced fibula was mainly worn in the second half of the 9th century and is decorated with open ornamental work in the characteristic Borre style.
Tortoise brooches were worn in pairs on the shoulder straps of the Viking dress and served as both a fastener and a status symbol. This version is from bronze and measures 6 x 4.8 cm.
Indispensable for those who want to complete a Viking dress, and suitable for re-enactment and living history.
