The Kampfrauen, or Trossfrauen, were the women who accompanied the retinue of the Landsknechten: washerwomen, marketers and wives who kept the camp life of these German mercenaries going. Like the men, they liked to wear bright colors and an exuberant cut — a visible sign of the same freedom from the dress laws that the Landsknechts themselves enjoyed. This one dress resumes that characteristic Renaissance style in the color scheme red-white.

The pleated one skirt falls naturally and moves with you, while floral cutwork along the hem adds a playful detail without being exaggerated. Long lacing straps at the front and back give you control over the fit, so the dress adapts to the number of layers you wear underneath. The outside is made of soft, brushed wool with a lining cotton, and drapes beautifully over a shirt or slip.

Wear this dress as basic of a sixteenth-century landsknecht costume, suitable for re-enactment and LARP, and easy to combine with a shirt or petticoat underneath.
