LARP Glossary

LARPers use a lot of special terminology, which can sometimes be confusing for newcomers. Below you will find the most commonly used terms and their meanings:

IC / OC

  • IC (In Character): Everything you do as your character, so within your role. For example, your behavior, clothing, and decisions.

  • OC (Out of Character): All out-of-game matters. This includes your everyday clothing or actions that have nothing to do with your character.
You can also say “IC” or “OC,” depending on whether you are in character or not.

Time in / Time out

  • Time in: The moment the game starts and you fully step into your character.

  • Time out: The moment the game is over. For example: “We go time-in at 8:00 PM” or “We are now time-out.”

NPC and Monsters

  • NPC (Non Player Character): Figures not played by players, but by organizers or volunteers.

  • Monsters: An alternative name for NPC’s.

  • Monster pen: The space where NPC’s gather for briefing, dressing, or other preparations.

SL’s

  • Game Masters (SL’s): The people who lead the event and ensure the game runs smoothly.

Brawling

  • Brawling: Role-playing fights during LARP.

  • Example: “I feel like having a good brawl” or “I have a brawl role.”

Props / physreps

  • Props: Props used during the game.

  • Physreps: Physical representations of weapons or objects, often used in fights to ensure safety.

Larpdip

  • Larpdip (afterdip, larp-blues, 'Monday feeling'): A temporary feeling of mild depression or loss after an intensive LARP experience, due to mental, emotional, or physical involvement in the game.

Time-Freeze

  • Sometimes the game master calls a Time-Freeze to temporarily pause the game, for example, to set up or prepare monsters.

  • During a Time-Freeze, time stands still for your character. You close your eyes and cover your ears.

  • The Time-Freeze ends when the game master calls "Time-in"; from that moment, time resumes normally for your character.

Hand Signals During Time-In

During the role-playing game (Time-In), you may encounter NPCs or players who use hand signals to show how they relate in the game:

  • Hand in the air: This character is OC. Your character does not see or hear this person; you completely ignore him or her.

  • Finger in the air: This person is invisible to your character. You might hear or smell them, but you act as if you do not notice their presence.

Summary

This glossary helps you quickly familiarize yourself with LARP terminology. By understanding the IC/OC status, time-in and time-out, and hand signals, you can participate more easily and experience the game realistically and safely.
