What Is EVA Foam?

Short Definition

EVA foam (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate foam) is a lightweight, flexible and durable foam material that is widely used in LARP, cosplay and re-enactment. The material is available in different densities, from soft and pliable to hard and rigid, making it suitable for both structural parts and finishing and detail work.

Properties of EVA foam

EVA foam has unique properties that make it ideal for LARP-weapons and accessories:

  • Lightweight – reduces fatigue during prolonged wear

  • Flexible – bends without breaking immediately

  • Wear-resistant – resistant to impacts and collisions

  • Easy to work with – cutting, sanding, shaping and gluing

  • Safe to use – absorbs impact and minimizes injury

  • Water-resistant – doesn't absorb water

The density determines whether the foam feels hard (structural, stable) or soft (resilient, comfortable).

Hard versus soft EVA foam

Within LARP, both types are often used, each with a specific function:

  • Hard EVA foam

  • Used for the core or structural parts of swords, shields and armour

  • Ensures that the weapon or object remains stable and maintains the correct shape

  • Suitable for surfaces that need to bend less

  • Soft EVA foam

  • Used for impact absorbing layer or finishing

  • Provides safety on impacts, for example on sword tips or edges

  • Easier to cut and shape for decorative details

Often a combination of hard and soft foam is applied: the hard core provides rigidity, while the soft outer layer provides safety and resilience.

Application in LARP

EVA foam is used for:

  • Swords and weapons

  • Shields and armour

  • Helmets and helmet ornaments

  • Accessories and props

  • Decorative elements on clothing and equipment

By combining hard and soft foam, weapons can be made both safe and realistic.

Maintenance and Care

EVA foam is low-maintenance, but a few tips will extend its lifespan:

  • Clean with a soft, damp cloth

  • Avoid sharp objects that could damage the surface

  • Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight

  • Protect against heavy pressure or prolonged deformation

Proper care prevents tears and loss of resilience.

Summary

EVA foam is a versatile, lightweight foam material used in LARP for both the structural core and safe finishing of weapons and props. Hard EVA foam provides rigidity, soft EVA foam absorbs impact and makes weapons safe. By combining both, a durable, safe and realistic LARP-weapon or accessory is created.
