This type of axe blade is classified as Petersen Type M, better known as the famous “Dane axe.” The blade has a wide, very thin-forged, wedge-shaped and flared cutting edge, often with yoke-like projections on either side of the eye. The head is relatively light due to the thin steel but large in surface area. This is the classic Dane axe, which began appearing in larger numbers around 950 AD. It was used by elite warriors, such as huscarls, and was specially suited for attacking cavalry and breaking shield walls. Type M heads have been found throughout Scandinavia, England, and Eastern Europe. Axes like these remained in use even into the 12th century and were used in the Middle Ages as sparth axes by the Gaelic peoples of the Irish Sea region.

This Viking axe was one of the few types of axes designed purely for combat. Originals have been found, among others, in Gotland. The hollow interior lowered the weight of the axe. This replica has a blunt edge, making it suitable for reenactment, and features a stained ash wood shaft.
