Scottish dirk & sgian dubh

The sgian dubh and Scottish dirk are perhaps, alongside the Broadsword and claymore, the most well-known Scottish weapons. Sgian dubh is Gaelic for black knife and was later often worn in the sock. It is an originally banned weapon used as a last resort when swords were not allowed. The Scottish Highlands were historically a dangerous place. Clans had alliances and hostilities that went back hundreds of years. Therefore, Highlanders were armed to the teeth. Almost everyone carried a dirk. The Scottish dirk was often made from broken broadswords and claymores. Scottish dirks were often used in combination with the broadsword and even worn under the shields of the Highlanders, the targe.
