The tradition of wearing a surcoat over armour originated during the Crusades. Surcoat helped prevent overheating, as the sun did not shine directly on the armour. Additionally, surcoat provided ideal protection for the chainmail shirt and later protected plate armour against corrosion and rust. This surcoat is provided with a slit, allowing the knight to use it more easily for cavalry purposes. From the end of the 12th century, particularly knights wore long surcoat. From the middle of the 13th century, these were increasingly adorned with personal coats of arms and were worn not only by the knightly class but sometimes also by foot soldiers in their entourage. In the early 14th century, shorter surcoat came into fashion, and by the end of the 14th century, they were replaced by the jupon.
This surcoat features a checkered pattern. It is made of sturdy cotton, hangs straight, and has slits on the sides from the waist for comfort and so that it can even be worn on horseback. At the front and back, it has shorter slits. The surcoat can be secured with a belt over your outfit or chainmail shirt.
