The percussion weapon known as a flail developed in the 12th century from the agricultural flail used for threshing, and was used until the 17th century. This medieval weapon is often, though incorrectly, referred to as a morning star, especially the variant in which the head is connected to the grip by a chain (ball-and-chain flail).
The medieval war flail was a shorter weapon consisting of a wood stick, connected by a chain, rope or leather strap to one or more striking heads. Variants such as the caskets — sometimes smooth, sometimes pointed — spread from the 10th century from Eastern Europe to the west. Images from the 15th to 17th centuries show both large, two-handed flails and shorter, one-handed versions. Famous examples can be seen in the painting Battle of Orsha (1520–1534), in The Travels of Marco Polo (ca. 1410) and in the military work Bellifortis (ca. 1450).
This replica consists of approximately 52 cm long ash wood shaft, which is fitted at the top with a metal sleeve and connected by three metal chains to heavy, star-shaped balls of high carbon steel. The surface of the steel balls, chains and sleeve has been intentionally left in its natural state and has a characteristic oxide layer from the forge that gives the weapon a rustic, authentic appearance. This medieval military flail is designed as a collector's item or decorative piece and, in addition to its value as a collector's item, it is also perfect as a prop, for example to complete your costume.
