Germanic Vendel helmet, 1.6 mm

This early Viking helmet is inspired by a 7th-8th century Germanic helmet found in Vendel in Sweden. Today it is part of the collection of the Swedish Museum of National Antiquities. Helmets like these were worn by the Germanic tribes such as the Anglo-Saxons and later by the Vikings. This helmet is a predecessor of the famous 10th century Gjermundbu helmet that was found in a Viking grave in Norway. This helmet is equipped with an inlay and chin strap. This helmet is 29.2×21 cm. The inner diameter of the helmet bowl is 68 cm. (measured excluding inlay) The eye protectors are 16.5 cm wide and the nose piece is 12.5 cm long. The eye slits are 6.6×3.1 cm. The helmet has a leather strap and steel buckle closure to secure it. To create more space in the helmet, the helmet insert can be removed.
