Buckler with leather covering, type IA, size L, 2 mm (battle-ready)

This buckler is classified by Herbert Schmidt as a type Ia; it has a round shape and straight edges. The first depictions of this type of buckler come from the early 14th century Tower manuscript, but these weapons were probably already in use far back in the 13th century. Bucklers like this remained in use into the 16th century.

This round buckler has a leather covering for extra protection. Bucklers like this were mainly used in the Renaissance, although the type was many years older. This weapon is ideally usable in combination with a one-handed sword or a bow.
