The bascinet is one of the most famous combat helmets of the late medieval period: an open helm that evolved from a rounded steel cap, but with a more pointed crown and a longer rim for extra protection of the neck and shoulders. At the bottom there was usually a mail aventail (also called camail), so that the throat and neck were also shielded. From around 1330 this type often came with a visor; by the early 15th century a metal gorget replaced the mail, which became known as the "great helm".
This model is equipped with a removable nose guard, the so-called bretache, made of sheet steel, fastened at the chin to the aventail and attached with a hook to the forehead — an execution that was especially common in Germany, between approximately 1330 and 1370. The advantage: you could wear the helm under a great helm and, once removed, still had some facial protection. This bretache preceded the later hinged visor.
Our version combines a steel arming cap with steel mail aventail, foam inlay for wearing comfort and an adjustable chin strap — ideal for re-enactment and collectors seeking an authentically looking model. The helm itself is not individually adjustable, but the inlay is removable for extra space.
