The blade-shaped spear head design was a common feature throughout various periods and cultures in the history of the spear. This type of spear head was already used in the Bronze Age and remained popular well into the Middle Ages, including the Viking period. The so-called "winged" or "perforated" spear, often associated with the Normans, actually originates in the Frankish Carolingian period. The Vikings adopted this design and used it both as a war spear and hunting spear, specially designed for hunting wild boar and size game. The "wings" or "perforations" on both sides of the spear head served multiple purposes. They prevented excessive penetration on a thrust, making it harder to pull the spear back. Additionally, they offered effective protection against enemy attacks during combat and provided extra control and protection when fighting wounded, enraged animals. This spear head with a blade-shaped blade and "wings" is made of hardened 9260 carbon steel of high quality. The design closely resembles the Carolingian spear heads that were widely used by warriors and hunters in the early Middle Ages. Therefore, this spear head is perfectly suited for Viking and medieval settings (approximately 8th/9th to 11th/12th century). The total length of the spear head is approximately 43.5 cm, with a blade of approximately 34 cm long. The blade is reinforced with a striking raised ridge in the middle, which provides extra rigidity and strength when piercing. The protruding "wings" have a thickness of approximately 4 mm. The spear head is supplied with two pre-drilled holes, with which you can securely attach it to a wood shaft of your choice to create your own spear.
