The caftan is a garment that originally comes from Persia and Central Asia and found its way to the Viking world through trade contacts with the steppe peoples and the East. Archaeologists distinguish two main forms: an older, asymmetrical wrap-over caftan with an overlapping front, known from finds in Valsgärde and Hedeby and already worn in the Vendel period (550-800 AD), and a later symmetrical caftan that closes with a row of buttons in the front. Brooches from Birka and the gold foils from Sorte Muld indicate that these types of jackets often come with a pin or fibula was secured at the hip.
