The mandilion was a type cloak or loose outer garment that was worn from the end of the 16th century, including by soldiers. Mandilions came in different designs: some were sleeveless, while others had loose or hanging sleeves. Characteristic was the ability to wear the garment over one shoulder, leaving the sword arm free. This way of wearing even became a fashion trend at the end of the 16th century.
