Landsknechts were the famous German mercenary soldiers of the late 15th and 16th centuries: infantrymen who, following the Swiss example (the Reislaufer), fought with long pikes and arquebuses, initially in the service of the Habsburg emperors. They played a decisive role in battles such as the Battle of Pavia (1525) and the Siege of Vienna (1529), and became infamous for their exuberant clothing style: bright color combinations, ostentatious cuts and enormous puffed sleeves that defied the strict dress codes of their time.

This square hat with a split brim is a less exuberant, but equally characteristic Landsknecht headgear, mainly worn by men from the middle and merchant classes. The cut in the edge invariably runs from the front to the back - recognizable in paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger and drawings by Albrecht Durer.

The beret is made of sturdy cotton.
