Snake amulet Hon-treasure, bronze

Product description

Amulets of this type are usually found in graves of Viking völvas. The snake probably represented healing, a symbolism already found in ancient Greece and other Proto-Indo-European religions. The function of the small axes at the bottom amulet hanging is not completely clear, but they may have had a ritual role — similar loose parts were also attached to the rods of völvas in the early Middle Ages. This amulet is based on a find from the Hon hoard, Buskerud (Norway), from the early Viking Age.

Performed in bronze, with dimensions of approximately 2 x 3 cm.
