This late medieval cap is based on the round headgear worn in late medieval Europe. The model shows similarities with the Italian beret, which developed from simple, round cap-shaped hats. Similar headgear was already known in the late Roman period, including the pileus pannonicus, worn by Roman soldiers.

In the late medieval period, this type of cap became particularly popular in Flanders and Burgundy, and it was also widely worn by townspeople and citizens in Southern Europe. From the end of the Middle Ages onwards, the cap remained in use during the Renaissance. Younger wearers often wore it loosely and at an angle on the head, while cardinals and other high-ranking persons wore it more upright, as can be seen in depictions of, among others, the doges of Venice.
