Lunula-amulet, 2nd-4th centuries, bronze

Product description

A lunula, like this crescent-shaped pendant, was worn by girls in ancient Rome as an apotropaic amulet — the female equivalent of the bulla that boys wore. The piece of jewelry, which refers to the moon goddess Luna, served as a talisman for protection against evil forces, demons, sorcery and especially the evil eye. Finds of this type have been made on Roman burial grounds and at army camps.

Performed in bronze, with dimensions of 3.1 x 3.5 cm.
