Landsknechts were the famous German mercenary soldiers of the late 15th and 16th centuries: infantrymen who, following the Swiss example (the Reislaufer), fought with long pikes and arquebuses, initially in the service of the Habsburg emperors. They played a decisive role in battles such as the Battle of Pavia (1525) and the Siege of Vienna (1529), and became infamous for their exuberant clothing style: bright color combinations, ostentatious cuts and enormous puffed sleeves that defied the strict dress codes of their time.

The teller beret is one of the best-known headgear from 16th-century Germany: a wide, round beret that came in all sizes and decorations, from modest to enormous and richly adorned with ostrich feathers. A simple cap (caul) was often worn under the beret; women also wore this model, as seen in paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder.

This beret is made of sturdy cotton. It can be secured with a cord under the chin.
