Product description

This ornament is a replica of one of the decorative helmet plates found in Torslunda in Sweden. The helmet plate features a richly adorned Vendel period warlord. Helmets as depicted on this ornament were often completely covered with decorative helmet plates. The warlord carries a spear, sword and wears an embroidered tunic. Helmets such as these have been found in Vendel, Valsgarde and at Sutton Hoo in England. It is made in the Germanic animal style II/B.

The Viking god Odin and Germanic god Wodan was the god of the aristocracy and warrior class. Odin/Wodan is associated with omniscience, he is the master of Runes and poetry and controls seidr (magic). The god is known as the god of war and death but his deeper meaning lies in the protection of cosmic order. According to mythology, Odin/Wodan is the first of kings and master of the Einingjarl, the heroic fallen warriors of Valhalla with whom he rides out to defeat Ragnarok (total chaos).
