Product description
Working closely with martial arts instructor Volker Kunkel and his West Coast Institute, Ulfberth developed this sword for sword fighting. The goal: a sturdy yet light, well-balanced combat sword at an accessible price point. Volker brought years of experience as an instructor and trainer in fencing to the project. Together with its swordsmiths, the Ulfberth team translated those specifications into a Viking sword built for battle — and delivering excellent value for money. Modeled on original finds from the 9th/10th century in Birka, Sweden, it is classified as Type H according to the Petersen typology for Viking swords. The blade is made from forged spring steel, hardened in oil and then tempered, with a Rockwell hardness of 48–52 HRC. The very wide groove gives it both flexibility and lightness. Cutting edges run approximately 2–2.5mm thick, and the rounded, relatively wide tip meets the requirements for tournament use. The sword features a classic three-lobed Viking pommel, peened, with continuous tang construction. This is the long version.
