This Viking helmet is based on historical originals of the spangenhelm, one of the most popular helmet types of the Early Middle Ages. It belongs to the nasal helmet type. Warriors across Europe used helmets like this from the 9th century onward, at least until shortly after 1066 — around the time both Norman and Anglo-Saxon fighters appear wearing them in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. The Vikings used helmets of this type, as did other Germanic peoples.
The well-known nasal helmet eventually evolved from this style of spangenhelm. Unlike later nasal helmets, early spangenhelms were originally made from multiple parts connected with spangen — a cheaper production method introduced during the Late Roman period. The nasal guard protects the entire face while keeping an optimal field of vision. These spangenhelms could also be repaired during campaigns.
The spangenhelm has a conical shape. This example features an aventail at the back for added protection.
