This Viking helmet is based on historical originals of the spangenhelm, one of the most popular helmet types of the Early Middle Ages. It belongs to the nasal helmet type. Helmets like this saw use across Europe from the 9th century onward, remaining in service at least until shortly after 1066 — the period depicted on both Norman and Anglo-Saxon warriors in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Vikings and other Germanic peoples alike wore helmets of this type.
The well-known nasal helmet eventually evolved from this spangenhelm design. Unlike later nasal helmets, early spangenhelms were originally built from multiple parts connected with spangen — a cheaper production method introduced during the Late Roman period. The nasal guard protects the entire face while keeping an optimal field of vision. These spangenhelms could also be repaired in the field during campaigns.
The spangenhelm features a conical shape. This particular example adds an aventail at the back for additional protection.
Made from 1 mm thick steel, this helmet is ideal for LARP, cosplay, or theatrical use. It includes a cotton liner for added comfort. Secure it with the leather chin strap and wear it comfortably for hours.
