This bronze Viking pendant features the Aegisjalmur motif. Aegisjalmur, or Helmet of Awe, is a powerful symbol of Norse mythology. You can find it in manuscripts dating from the Middle Ages all the way to the eighteenth century. The name comes from the god Aegir, god of the seas of Jotunheim, the land of the ice giants. In the Edda, the dragon Fafnir claims he is invincible because he wears this symbol. Many Vikings wore it in battle, hoping it would strengthen them and make them victorious like Fafnir.
