Product description
This Viking axe is a replica of a 10th-century original found in Mammen, Denmark. The original is now part of the collection at the National Museum (Nationalmuseet) in Copenhagen. Discovered in a male burial, it likely belonged to a Viking chieftain or a very wealthy Viking. The axe is decorated in the Mammen style — a Viking art style that actually takes its name from this very axe. On the original, the engravings were inlaid with silver.
This axe head is classified as Petersen type H. The haft socket is slender and the blade is asymmetrical, with the lower part curving more sharply toward the socket. It was likely designed specifically for warfare and saw use from around 900 to 975 AD.
