Product description
This Viking helmet is based on historical originals of the spangenhelm — one of the most popular helmet types of the Early Middle Ages. It follows the nasal helmet design. Helmets like this were used across Europe from the 9th century onward, remaining in use at least until shortly after 1066. They appear on both Norman and Anglo-Saxon warriors in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Vikings wore this type of helmet, as did other Germanic peoples.
This spangenhelm design eventually gave rise to the well-known nasal helmet. Unlike later nasal helmets, early spangenhelms were made from multiple parts connected with spangen — a cheaper production method introduced during the Late Roman period. The nasal guard protects the entire face while keeping an optimal field of vision. These spangenhelms could also be repaired in the field during campaigns.
The helmet features a conical bowl, with the nasal guard attached separately to the lower spang. This construction technique was very popular in the Early Middle Ages, making this one of the most common helmet types of the era.
Made from 1 mm thick steel, this helmet is ideal for LARP, cosplay, or theatrical use. The spangenhelm includes a nasal guard that protects the face.
