Product description
This Viking pocket knife features a sharpened 256-layer Damascus steel blade. Made from bone and adorned with period details, the handle gives each knife a distinctive character. Because the knife is fully hand-crafted, the ornaments may vary slightly from piece to piece.
The terms Damascus steel, damascene, and pattern welded all describe a compound steel forged from two or more different types of steel. The name comes from its birthplace — the Syrian city of Damascus, once a major center of patterned steel production. Craftsmen repeatedly forge weld and fold together a harder high carbon steel and a milder low carbon steel. The high carbon steel delivers greater hardness, better temperability, and longer-lasting edge retention, while the milder steel adds blade flexibility and tensile strength. This technique — developed at a time when steel quality was often low and inconsistent — combines the best attributes of each steel grade. The varying carbon content of the alternating layers also creates strikingly beautiful patterns, such as the twisted Torsion Damascus pattern and the Rose Damascus pattern. These unusual patterns help explain why people attributed magical properties to Damascus steel blades throughout the Middle Ages.
