Aegisjalmur, or Helmet of Awe, is a powerful symbol of Norse mythology — visible in manuscripts from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. The name comes from the god Aegir, god of the seas of Jotunheim, the land of the ice giants. In the Edda, the dragon Fafnir declares himself invincible because he wears this symbol. Many Vikings wore it in battle, hoping it would strengthen them and bring them victory like Fafnir.
