Viking coin Knut king of the Danelaw

The Vikings of the Danelaw minted their own coins. This coin was made in York (Jorvik) during the reign of Knut, king of the Danes, Norse, and Danelaw in England.

Like many other rulers, Knut minted coins bearing his likeness. The coin carries the inscription CNVT REX ANGLORVM (Knut king of England). His death in 1035, along with the deaths of his predecessors, marked the end of Viking rule over England. Shortly after, in 1066, the Vikings tried again to reclaim their hold over England — this time fighting the Anglo-Saxons alongside William the Conqueror.
