Product description
This Vikingamulet replicates a 10th-century original found in Stora Ryk. Today it belongs to the collection of the National Museum of Sweden. The piece was part of the silver treasure of Stora Ryk, near the Norwegian border — possibly buried during an attack by a hostile tribe.
Shield jewelry consists of round amulets with a central button, sometimes with handle and wheel motifs. Archaeologists often find them in women's graves, worn loose or as part of a hanging chain, likely with religious meaning. In Graf BJ 844, excavators found a Schildamulet alongside other magical symbols, presumably from a Völva. Elite women wore this type of jewelry for protection against magic and the evil eye. The Gongu-Hrolfs Saga references this practice, describing a shield placed over the face of a magician.
