The doublet was a fitted men's jacket worn in Western Europe from the Middle Ages until the 17th century. Originally worn as an undergarment beneath chainmail or a cuirass to prevent chafing, doublets became more decorative by the 15th century and were sometimes worn on their own.

Doublets were extremely popular in the 16th century. During this period, men sometimes wore a leather jacket or vest over the doublet. This style dates from the first half of the 16th century onward.

Made from velvet, this doublet fastens at the front with metal buttons.
