Product description
This dress is based on originals from around the 13th–15th century. Medieval illuminated manuscripts such as the Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry depict this style in large numbers. Also known as a cotehardie, this type of dress increasingly showed off the female form — a sharp contrast to the shapeless gowns of earlier centuries. Laces and buttons along the front emphasize the waist and bust, letting ladies wear their dresses fitted close to the body. The neckline, too, was cut deeper and deeper over time. Women often paired the cotehardie with a slip dress, a belt, and a bonnet.
Made from velveteen, this cotehardie has a luxurious look that makes it perfect for re-enactment and LARP portraying noble and wealthy historical figures and characters. Velvet emerged in Europe during the 14th century, woven primarily in Italy. For the medieval Burgundians, velvet garments symbolized prosperity and prestige and were highly fashionable.
