These (early) medieval turnshoes with a slightly raised shaft are based on historical models from the 7th to the 12th century. Archaeologists found them at sites including Haithabu (Hedeby), an important Viking settlement, and in London, where similar styles date to the early to mid-13th century. Two leather straps wrap across the instep to close the shoes and hold them snugly in place. A distinctive front seam runs along the top of the shoe—a hallmark of this style of footwear. Turnshoes are medieval leather shoes stitched inside out, then turned right side out to protect the seams on the inside.
The shoes come pre-treated, so you can wear them straight out of the box—no greasing or polishing needed, though doing so will help preserve the leather even longer. The treatment gives the leather a beautiful antique look and better resistance to moisture, making these a practical choice for damp fall events. Only the leather sole needs a separate treatment to improve water resistance. Like all turnshoes, this model is stitched entirely inside out and then reversed, using no glue—a traditional technique typical of historical footwear from this period.
