Product description

This scutum is modeled after a variety of examples from the Roman Republic. Soldiers used shields like this between the 7th century BC and the 1st century AD. The Republican scutum was oval in shape; in later times it became rectangular. Warriors curved the scuta to deflect blows.

Made from several layers of wood and covered with red-dyed linen, this shield measures 126 cm long and 88 cm wide at its widest point. It weighs about 7 kg. The scutum features an iron umbo.
