This sgian dubh is made from several layers of Damascus steel. The name sgian dubh means "black knife". Warriors typically wore this dagger in their sleeve during the 17th and 18th centuries. An old custom held that a Highlander could not carry weapons inside when entering a house. For self-defense, he would often hide a sgian dubh in his sock. If a fight broke out, he could escape or fight back with the dagger. After Culloden, soldiers of the Black Watch regiment always wore this dagger in their sock.
