This earthenware cylinder is modeled after the container that held the Dead Sea Scrolls. Like the scrolls themselves, these date from between 250 BC and 50 AD. The cylinders protected the scrolls from damage and wear. Cylinders like these were used throughout the classical world.
Made from red clay, this cylinder is entirely handmade and thrown on a potter's wheel. It comes with a lid and is fully functional — use it to store papyrus scrolls. It stands 22 cm tall with a diameter of 11 cm.
