Product description
The shashka, Cherkessian for "long knife," is a saber of Caucasian origin. The Russian army adopted it in the 19th century, and it eventually became the legendary weapon of the famous Cossacks. Its most distinctive feature was the hilt — no handguard, just a characteristic downward-curved pommel. On horseback, the shashka excelled thanks to this unique design, making it an outstanding cavalry weapon. This piece is a replica of an original Soviet Cossack saber, model 1927, produced in 1934 at the Slatoust arms factory, USSR. During World War II, the Red Army still carried this type of NKVD shashka. The blade is made from EN45 spring steel and treated with an artificial patina to simulate signs of use. The finely detailed pommel is engraved with the initials C.C.C.P., a star, and a hammer and sickle. On the crossguard, the markings and serial number from the original artifact have been recreated as faithfully as possible. Both the pommel and crossguard are cast from brass with an antique finish. The ribbed handle is made from wood. Included is a bayonet about 50 cm long, designed for the Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle. The saber comes with a brown wooden/leather scabbard. The bayonet fitting, muzzle cap, and baffle plate are all made from brass with an antique finish.
